Foldable or adjustable pole, which is best for me?

Foldable poles have the benefits of fixed length poles while being able to also be packed - so the best of both worlds.

Fixed length poles are stronger than two or three pieces put together. Fixed length poles - disadvantages: Can't be compacted down for easy transportation/ storage, and can't be used for different users of different heights.

Adjustable poles - advantages: Super convenient when travelling, easy to carry on public transport or to store at home. * Note that only 3-piece poles collapse small enough to fit in a suitcase.

Adjustable poles - disadvantages: Not suitable for people lacking hand strength (eg. arthritic fingers) as they may not be able to tighten the mechanism well enough. Besides that, the mechanism bears risk of wearing out (unlikely) or corroding over time (possible in coastal areas where there is salty air). Most adjustable poles are aluminium poles, and aluminium is a relatively soft metal resulting in possible. Adjustable poles made from carbon are more expensive but much stronger and usually lighter than aluminium poles.

Travelling with Nordic Walking Poles

Both our pole models make travel easy. The adjustable poles fold down to 66cm, while the foldable poles have a pack size of under 40cm.

Lifespan of poles

The lifespan of your poles will depend on both, their quality and how you treat them. At Nordic Academy we recommend only high quality LEKI poles which are designed to withstand regular use and should be enjoyed for many years.

Rubber Pads and Wrist Straps

The two parts of a pole that are most prone to wear and tear are the tips and the wrist strap.

Tips on LEKI poles are made from Tungsten Carbide rather than cheaper metals which means they are much more durable than cheaper alternatives. Using rubber pads on hard surfaces such as roads or footpaths are made from volcanic rubber. They do last very long; being rubber, they will evnetually wear out. Please noter: do not use rubber pads off-road.

The wrist strap is the part of the pole you have most contact with so it needs to be both comfortable and durable. The wrong wrist strap can feel like wearing shoes that are too small – they will pinch and blister your hand. To gain most power from your arms, look for a wrist strap that cushions the whole hand and ensures that the pressure applied can be distributed evenly. At Nordic Academy we only stock properly constructed wrist straps and they come with an industry standard six month warranty.
